Sparkle and Shine
Posted on December 20, 2011
“People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in; their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within” ---Elizabeth Kubler-Ross (Swiss American Psychiatrist and Author)
Today, I feel like lying under the Christmas tree and looking up at the lights. As I lay there, I spot a light that’s flickering, but it’s not supposed to. These aren’t the twinkling kind. This light is flickering, because it has been brought out year after year for over ten good years, to perform on this stage of a tree. And what a performance it gave. It would shine and gleam, lending it’s brightness to all the other ornamental embellishments. I applaud you, my little pulsating light as you finally fade to black… burned in my memory.
As I lay there, I think of a conversation I had with a friend recently about someone I know, whom I was worried about, and she said, “She once was a glittering ocean with a bright sparkle, but now she feels she’s lost her shine.” I thought to myself, how can you lose what you’ve created for yourself? I just don’t think it’s possible. Is it that she’s not aware of how special she is, or that she’s not told by her loved ones? Is it that she’s not where she truly wants to be, even though we all have choices? Perhaps she’s not doing what she loves. It’s just so sad to hear this about anyone, much less her. I think there’s a sparkle in all of us, and it’s up to us to find it.
I am an advocate of self worth, I mean really, who isn’t? And I don’t think you can lose it, but perhaps you can lose sight of it or forget your worth. Maybe you just need to do some rearranging. Feng Shui your life! Some things stay, and some must go.
Ahh, this all brings me to another friend. Sadly, we lost another dear friend to cancer yesterday. Kenny McClain was a young and incredibly sweet man. It was a very quick moving cancer too, and with only a few rounds of Chemo in his body, he passed sometime in the morning. We pray for him and all of his family and friends. He’ll be deeply missed, and will forever shine in our hearts and memories.
Eventually, we’ll all fade to black, like my little pulsating light, and we’ll shine like Kenny in the memories and hearts of the loved ones we leave behind. But, while we’re here, while we’re active and able, we should take deep breaths; polish away anything that may be hindering our bright lights from glimmering. Stand tall and proud, so stunning and vivid that it starts to become infectious, passing on from person to person.
I challenge you to release your sparkle, or as fellow songwriter Kevin Higgins would say… “Find Your Shine!”
